This measures how much water can pool onto the top of your tent before it starts to seep through the material. This is measured in millimetres. Around 2000mm/78.4in is a good number to aim for if you want to withstand some heavier showers. Not all tent manufacturers use this measurement, but you can still check if they’ll be waterproof by seeing if they have heat-sealed seams (to stop water from coming in at the edges) or wick-resistant thread (to protect your tent against wear and tear in the elements).
Your tent may or may not come with a rain fly. This is a rain-resistant outer layer, which will either partially or fully cover the tent. You can also buy a tent footprint, which gives you a layer of protection on the ground.
