What to Look for in a Tall 4-Person Tent

Inside view of a 4 person tent

Here’s a quick look at the features you might want to look out for when you’re tent shopping:

Capacity

Obviously, we’ll be covering tall 4-person tents today, but it’s worth bearing in mind that just because a tent says it can sleep 4 people, doesn’t mean that you’ll have a lot of room leftover – look at the measurements and the floor plan to see if you feel comfortable with the amount of space you would have between each person.

Length and Height

The other major thing you’ll be looking for is the size of the tent. If you’re 6 ft 8 in or above, you might find it tricky to fit into a normal tent. The tents on this list are at least 88 inches (about 7 ft 3 in) in length, and you can get tents that go all the way up to 102 inches (8.5 ft) or more.

Where it gets more difficult is finding a tent that is of the sufficient height. There are tents that are specifically designed to be tall in the middle section. Some of the tents on this list are as tall as 7ft – this will allow most people to stand up comfortably.

In this article, you’ll find that between 45-50 inches (around 4ft) is the average height (with some a little smaller). Obviously, you’ll need to consider if this is comfortable for you to sit down in to avoid neck aches.

If you want a tent with plenty of head room, look for one that is structured with straight walls (as opposed to a dome tent). This will give you more height.

Seasons

You can find tall 4-person tents that are suitable for different seasons:

  • 1 Season – thin, lightweight tents intended for use in the summer only, with little waterproofing
  • 2 Seasons – ideal for spring/summer, these have some waterproofing but are still lightweight for warm weather
  • 3 Seasons – the most versatile, these are breathable and well-ventilated for warmer weather, but waterproofed to keep you dry and safe in harsher conditions
  • 4 Seasons – only designed for cold weather, these are made of heavy, double-layered fabric
  • 5 Seasons – specialist tents designed for explorers to protect them against very extreme weather

Generally speaking, unless you’re only camping in a warmer climate, a 3-season tent is your best bet in terms of versatility and value for money, as you can use it in a variety of places without worrying too much about the weather.

Weatherproofing

Drops of water on a black tent

The first thing to look for is how waterproof your tent is. This is sometimes (but not always) measured using the term ‘hydrostatic head measurement’. This measures how much water can pool onto the top of your tent before it starts to seep through the material. This is measured in millimetres. Around 2000mm/78.4in is a good number to aim for if you want to withstand some heavier showers. Not all tent manufacturers use this measurement, but you can still check if they’ll be waterproof by seeing if they have heat-sealed seams (to stop water from coming in at the edges) or wick-resistant thread (to protect your tent against wear and tear in the elements).

Your tent may or may not come with a rain fly. This is a rain-resistant outer layer, which will either partially or fully cover the tent. You can also buy a tent footprint, which gives you a layer of protection on the ground.

Tents are typically made from the following materials:

  • PVC (cotton coated in poly vinyl chloride)
  • Nylon (which may or may not be coated with acrylic or silicone for extra waterproofing)
  • Polyester (usually coated in the same way as nylon)
  • Polycotton canvas (a mixture of cotton/polyester)
  • Duck canvas (a kind of heavy, woven cotton – nothing to do with actual ducks, so it’s animal-friendly)

The other thing to consider is ventilation. If you’re camping in very warm weather, you’ll need good ventilation to keep you cool. Some tents have two doors that unzip fully to allow air to flow through, with a mesh layer to keep out insects – this is a pretty good call for warm, humid conditions.

Size and Weight

It goes without saying that the more material your tent has, the heavier and bigger it will be when folded. Taller tents contain more fabric, which means they’re going to be a little heavier than shorter tents. You can still get some lightweight options though (as you’ll see later in this article).

It’s worth checking the size packed if you can, even if you’re just going on a one-off trip rather than travelling – if you don’t have much room, you’ll need to check if it will fit where it needs to in your car or as part of your luggage. If you’re travelling and you need to squeeze a tent in your backpack, you may be able to separate the tent into parts to split it between you and your travelling companions, but it’s worth seeking out the smallest packed size possible.

Ease of Setup

Finally, it’s worth considering how easy it is to set up. If you’re a seasoned pro, this might not worry you so much, but if you don’t have a lot of camping experience, you’ll have to think about how easy it will be to set up your tent (especially if you happen to arrive in the middle of a storm, or if you arrive at night with limited visibility). Checking reviews is helpful here, as most people are happy to report about how easy (or difficult) it was to set up their tent.

Now, let’s look at some great tall 4-person tents – starting with a brilliant all-rounder.

Eureka! Copper Canyon LX, 3 Season, Family and Car Camping Tent (4 Person)
305 Reviews
Eureka! Copper Canyon LX, 3 Season, Family and Car Camping Tent (4 Person)
  • The Eureka! Copper Canyon LX 4 four-person, three-season camping tent is your home away from home. Easy setup, smart features, and full standing height make it Eureka’s most livable family car camping tent.
  • Extended fly coverage over the door provides extra weather protection and dry entryway.
  • Steep walls create lots of standing room and are ideal when camping with air mattress and cots.
  • Large mesh windows with waterproof curtains offer scenic views and plenty of ventilation.
  • Durable, steel and fiberglass frame features pole sleeves corner hubs, and quick clips for simple 1 person set up.

The Eureka Copper Canyon is brilliant for taller people – the nearly completely straight walls give a height of 7ft, so it’s one of the taller tents on the market. Plus, the length is 8ft – so you can sleep comfortably at night with plenty of room to stretch out.

It’s a one-room tent, with lots of room for 4 people. The tent includes a zippered powerport, allowing you to run an extension cord indoors so you can have electricity inside in a safe way, as well as large and small storage pockets and overhead storage.

It has large, mesh windows for ventilation and waterproof curtains – so even in bad weather, you can enjoy the view wherever you are. The tent also has an extended fly coverage, which helps to keep the rain out of the entryway.

In terms of set up, it’s a mixed bag. Some more experienced campers found that two people could easily get it set up in around ten minutes, but newer campers found it a little more difficult, with the lack of labelled parts making it harder than it should be. It may be worth practicing putting up this tent before you go.

Pros

  • Plenty of headroom at 7ft
  • Lots of storage space
  • Zippered powerport included
  • Lots of ventilation as well as good waterproofing

Cons

  • Not the easiest in terms of set up

The Moon Lence Pop Up Family Tent is not the tallest tent on this list – at just above 4ft, it’s not going to give you standing room – but it does have a good length of 7.5ft.

It’s a one-room tent with small pockets for items like your phone or keys. It doesn’t come with any overhead storage, though, which is a shame.

It’s made of sturdy materials with good waterproofing (2000mm is a great hydrostatic head measurement to keep you dry in most weathers), and it has high-quality zippers which provide good resistance against draughts. There are windows on all 5 sides, with mesh to provide ventilation but keep insects out. The door rolls completely to the ground, which is great for hot weather.

The main selling point of this tent is the ease of setup. It’s a popup tent, meaning you can just pull up the middle, straighten out the poles and you’re done – users reported how easy it is to do even on the first try. It’s also very lightweight and easy to carry.

Pros

  • Lengthy at 7.5ft
  • Lightweight
  • Good waterproofing and ventilation
  • Very easy to set up

Cons

  • Not the tallest, so won’t provide you with much headroom
  • Doesn’t have much storage

  • Flex-Bow Frame: Exceptionally sturdy. Keeps tent taut. Quick and easy, one-person, setup

The Kodiak Canvas Flex-Bow is pretty good when it comes to height, at 6ft (72in). It’s not the tallest out there, but it’s not bad. Plus, the length is impressive at 9ft (108in). It’s a roomy tent with a storage loft for equipment. The quality of the materials is great, so you can expect this tent to last a long time.

It’s advertised as a 4-season tent, so it will withstand some pretty bad weather, but it’s also got good ventilation. The two doors at the front and back can be fully unzipped with mesh panels, and it has two large windows. Pros

  • Good amount of height and great length

Cons

ALPS Mountaineering Camp Creek 4-Person Tent – Best on a Budget

ALPS Mountaineering Camp Creek 4-Person Tent

Key Features

  • Sleeps: 4
  • Size:
    – 7.6L x 8.6W x 7H (ft)
    – 91.2L x 103W x 84H (in)
    – 232L x 262W x 213H (cm)
  • Size packed:
    – 8 x 28 (in)
    – 20 x 71 (cm)
  • Weight: 91.kg/20lb
  • Materials: Polyester with 1500mm coating
  • Seasons: 3

The ALPS Mountaineering Camp Creek tall 4-person tent is a really great choice on a budget. The height, at 7ft (84in), is really generous given the low cost, and it’s long enough to make it comfortable to sleep in at 7.6ft (91.2in). It’s a one-room tent with a three-pocket mesh storage area for smaller items like your phone, or a water bottle.

It does offer some rain protection, but at 1500mm, it’s not going to protect you from very bad weather conditions. (If you’re expecting bad weather, it may be worth investing in some decent waterproof clothing – you can check out our guide to the best travel jackets for women or our guide to the best travel jackets for men for some good recommendations.)

It has large windows with a mesh layer, which is great for ventilations, and the door can be rolled all the way open on hot days, making it a good choice for camping in warmer climates.

The only downside is that it isn’t the easiest to set up. It’s probably worth giving this one a practice before you take it out for real.

Pros

  • Offers good ventilation
  • Tons of height and a good length
  • Fairly light to carry

Cons

  • Isn’t as weatherproof as others on this list
  • Not the easiest to set up

Coleman 2-For-1 All Day 4-Person Shelter & Tent
  • Versatile 4-person tent can be used as a shelter or outdoor tent
  • Sets up in about 15 minutes with attachment clips that let you easily connect and disconnect the tent and shelter
  • WeatherTec system with patented welded floors and inverted seams helps keep you dry
  • Sturdy frame tested to withstand strong winds
  • Spacious interior fits 2 queen-size airbeds

The Coleman 2-in-1 All-Day Shelter and Tent is a great tall 4- person tent option if you want a lot of headroom. It works really well as a shelter in the daytime but is weatherproof enough to use as a tent – plus, it has a whopping 10ft (120cm) length and 7.2ft (86.4cm) height. There’s plenty of room for four people in this tent.

It’s not the most weather-proof tent out there. Although it does come with WeatherTec protection (this is Coleman’s own protective coating which they use on their tents and shelters), it’s not really designed to be used in harsh weather conditions. It’s very well-ventilated, with large doors, and can be assembled without the actual tent walls, creating a shelter from the sun.

It seems to be average in terms of ease of setup, with some reviewers finding it very easy to do, and others needing a bit more practice. If you’ve got the room, it’s worth trying this at home first if you want to make sure you’ve got it down before you go on your trip.

Pros

  • Versatile
  • Tons of space
  • Lots of height, so plenty of headroom, and very long
  • Well ventilated

Cons

  • Not designed for bad weather
  • On the larger side when packed down

Frequently Asked Questions

Man drinking water in a tent during winter

Can I get sleeping pads for taller people?

Yes, there are sleeping pads for taller people – check out our guide to sleeping pads if you want more information.

If a tent isn’t the right size for me, can I return it?

That really depends on the tent manufacturer/retailer. It’s definitely worth triple checking their refund policy before you buy.

Which tent manufacturers are most well-regarded?

Probably the most recognisable manufacturers creating good-quality tents are Coleman, Big Agnes, Eureka!, and ALPS Mountaineering – but there are lots of brands out there creating great tents.

If a tent is advertised for a tall person, should I be able to stand up in it?

Not necessarily. If a manufacturer refers to a tall tent, they could be talking about the length as opposed to the height. Some tents make it impossible for most people to stand up in – it depends on the structure (as we mentioned earlier – try to go for a tent with straight walls if possible, for extra height).

Conclusion – Which Tall 4-Person Tent is the Best?

Man lyuing down in a transparent tent

In our opinion, if you want a really great tent with lots of headroom, you could try the Eureka! Copper Canyon 4-Person Tent. It’s a great tent, perfect for lots of different weather conditions, and it has a lot of length and height – perfect if you want a tent that you can walk around in.

However, if you’re on a tighter budget, don’t write off the ALPS Mountaineering Camp Creek 4-Person Tent. At 7ft (84in) tall, it’s going to give you a lot of height, but bear in mind that it’s not going to give you the same weather protection as some of the others on this list – but if you’re a tall person camping in warm weather, it could be the perfect solution.

We hope you enjoyed this round up of tall 4-person tents – keep checking back for more reviews and camping tips!
